Skill: BALANCE
Drill: One Leg Relay Race
Equipment needed: One cone per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students are going to have a relay race up and down the mat on one foot.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – Each team can have silly names to gain points for, so the students feel more motivated to gain points, like “hamburgers vs. hotdogs”.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The student must remember to hold their leg up the entire time, doing multiple hops, as they race down the mat.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have them line up on one side of the training deck. Use a cone to mark the starting point.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When you say “go” the first student in line will jump on their right leg up and back down the mat. If they put their left foot down, then they must stop and do five push-ups, and continue.
  • The next student in line will go when the student jumping crosses the starting point (cone).
  • Continue until each student has a turn. After everyone in line has a turn, the entire line must sit in a straight line.
  • The first line sitting is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Hold your chambered leg tight
  • Hop with control
Step 5
  • Repeat the drill using the opposite leg.
