Skill: BALANCE
Drill: Crocodile Race
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: In this drill the students will practice building their balance while walking. The students will walk in a duck like position while they hold onto the shoulders of the person in front of them. This will help them build strong balance and key motor skills in their legs.
Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY
The instructor can say another word that sounds like “go” in order to trick the students, like “gopher” and “ghost”. This will further test their auditory processing, as they have to listen for the whole word and not just the sounds of the word.
Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION
The students must be able to work together with their team to make their way down the mat. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at one time, as they have to focus on walking in a nonconventional way, and also focus on their team and making sure they do not let go of the person in front of them.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2
  • Have them sit in duck walk position and place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” youwill race all the way down the mat with your team in “crocodile” position.
  • You must keep your hands on the shoulders of the person in front of you.
  • If you let go then your team may be disqualified.
  • The first team to the other end of the mat first is the winner.
Step 4
  • Continue until each team has at least two turns.
