Skill: VERSATILITY
Drill: Surrounded
Equipment needed: 4 kicking shields for each group
Instructors needed: One for each group
Description: Students will work on their VERSATILITY by practicing looking before moving in their form. This will challenge them intellectually because it is hard to break a bad habit of not looking before they move.
Teaching SKILLZ: Extrinsic Motivation
motivate students to improve accuracy by rewarding those who consistently look first and kick the correct direction without mistakes.
Brain SKILLZ: Attention Control
students must focus on the instructor’s callout and train themselves to look before moving, reinforcing sustained focus and precision in their reactions.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill
Give four students in each group a kicking shield and designate them each a direction
Step 3 – Explain the Rules
  • One student will hop in the middle
  • The instructor will call out one of the four directions
  • The student in the middle will have to look at them and then throw a sidekick
  • If they miss a kick or go to the wrong one, they will have to do five pushups
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Listen so you are ready to react
  • React fast so you have time to do your sidekick
  • Kick strong so you stop the other student
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has had two turns
