Today we are going to work on SPEED and CONCENTRATION.
SPEED means full, maximum, or optimum rate of motion.
CONCENTRATION means to have exclusive attention to the task at hand.
We are going to run one SPEED drill and one CONCENTRATION drill, and then review the testing requirements for both SKILLZ.
Skill-Building Drills – 10 Minutes
Bag Tag:
In this drill the students are going to play a game of wave bag tag to challenge their reaction time.
Teaching SKILLZ: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can ask the students if they want a blackbelt challenge, and if they want to be like a blackbelt, then instead of doing one move at a time, the instructor will call out combinations. This will motivate the students to get stronger, since they have a common goal of getting a blackbelt one day and picking a challenge will help them get there.
Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor call out a number, connect the number to the appropriate technique they are supposed to do, and hit the pad correctly before the other students in order to get a point. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately.
Blind Competition:
In this drill, the students will practice concentrating by performing various Martial Arts combinations while blindfolded.
Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can do five pushups if the student gets the combination correct. If the student makes a mistake, then they will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the combination that the instructor gives them, and perform it correctly. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they must be able to remember the correct combination, even though they could only hear the instructor call it out and couldn’t see it first.
