Drill:
Army Crawl Relay
Equipment needed:
One small pad per line
Instructors needed:
1 per Line
Description:
The students will build their fitness skills by army crawling down the mat while holding a small square pad on the back of their legs. Holding the pad with their legs prevents them from using their legs to crawl, and forces them to use only their arms.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – Instead of saying “go”, the instructor can say words that sound similar, like “gopher” and “ghost” in order to keep the students engaged and improve their auditory processing.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to crawl down the mat as fast as they can, while also keeping their feet together the whole time, or else the pad will fall down. This works on their ability to do multiple things at one time, as they have to crawl as quick as they can to try and win the race, but also keep their feet together or the pad will fall.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines on one end of the mat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” the first student in each line will begin army crawling down the mat while holding the pad with their legs.
  • If you drop the pad, then you must stop and grab the pad and place it back on your legs.
  • Once you reach the end of the mat, grab the pad and race back to the next person in line.
  • Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • The line that finishes the fastest is the winner.
  • Step 5
  • Continue until every student has a turn.
