Skill: Fitness
Drill: Cone Hop Relay
Equipment needed: Four cones and one kicking target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build their lower body muscles as they power jump over the cones and then kick the targets.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” in order to motivate the students to be the fastest and win as a team, as well as keep the students engaged. On top of this, the instructor can also say “which line is going to jump the highest?” This will motivate the students to jump higher while they do the drill for their team.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to jump over the cones that are laid out, and complete a number of kicks on the pad while alternating legs. After this, they will jump back over the cones and have a seat. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Divide your class into several lines and have them line up on one end of the mat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line set up four cones spaced apart and have one instructor on the other end of the cones with a kicking target
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student in line will jump over the cones and then do twenty kicks alternating their feet on the kicking target.
  • After twenty kicks, they will power jump back over the cones to and run to the end of the line.
  • On the second round, make it a contest to see which line is the fastest.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Jump over cones with touching them
  • Kick the proper number of times alternating legs
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
