Drill: Car Race Relay
Equipment needed: Four cones, one slammer target, and one clapper target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build their core muscles by pushing a slammer pad in and out of the cones.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” in order to motivate the students to be the fastest and win as a team, as well as keep the students engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to move their pad as quickly as they can in a specific pattern, then they must complete ten crunches while hitting the pad, and then race back to their line while moving the pad in the same pattern. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Divide your class into several lines and have them line up on one end of the mat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line set up four cones spaced apart and have one instructor on the other end of the cones with a clapper target.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Also explain how to do a speed-bag crunch:
  • Lay on your back
  • Crunch up and circle your fists hitting the pad twice with each fist
  • Keep your tummy tight the entire time
  • The first student in line will race their slammer pad down the mat.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Strengthen your core muscles
  • Work on body speed
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
