Drill: Shuttle Jacks
Equipment needed: 4-5 Cones Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice PERSEVERANCE by demonstrating a very difficult exercise they must do this a fast as they can without stopping to win.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to do the correct amount of jumping jacks at every cone every time, while running as well. They must do this until they reach the last cone. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being their body getting tired.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need an instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student will run to the first cone and demonstrate 5 jumping jacks, then run back to the starting cone.
  • Then they go to the next cone down and do 10 jumping jacks, and back to the starting cone.
  • They will repeat this process of adding 5 for each cone, the 1st student back wins a point for their team.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Breathe so that you don’t get tired.
  • Go as fast as you can so that you can win a point for your team.
  • Look as good as you can, try not to look tired.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 – 3 turns.
