Skill: Perseverance
Drill: Arm Burn Out
Equipment needed: Two focus mitts per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will do a ladder-style mitt combo to burn-out their arm muscles. The purpose of this drill is to push the students to not give up on their technique as their arms get tired.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can have the students choose how fast they would like to go on their turn: slow, medium, fast, or ninja fast. This will empower the students as they will have some control over how they practice, and they will be more motivated to do their turn. This will also allow the students comfortable for a challenge to make their turn harder, and it will allow the students who are still getting the hang of things to go at their own pace.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students must be able to perform the combination quickly and consistently as they play this drill. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they must be able to perform the combination without hesitation in order to get better.
Step 1
Line up your students into several lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
If your students have punching gloves, have them put them on quickly.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will hit the focus mitts with the following combination: left punch, right punch, left hook, right hook, left uppercut, right uppercut.
  • After your first rep, you will do two of each strike and so forth until you reach five.
  • As you reach the higher level of reps your arms will burn, but you must have perseverance to keep going.
  • If you have time for a second round, you can make it a contest to see who maintained the best effort throughout the burn-out.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work your arms until they are fatigued, and then continue to work them.
  • Work on the various speeds even when your arms are tired.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
