Skill: Perseverance
Drill: Don’t Lose Your Feet
Equipment needed: One foam sword per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice having endurance by jumping non-stop over a noodle for thirty seconds. The goal is for them to avoid getting their feet hit with the noodle, and for every time the noodle hits their feet, they have 5 push-ups once the time is up.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student gets hit with the noodle while they are jumping, then they will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must jump multiple times without getting hit with the noodle swinging at their feet. This works on the ability to participate in visual activities, as they have to track the moving noodle and estimate when they should jump, to not get hit with the noodle.
Step 1
Divide your class into even lines with no more than six students per line. For each line you will need an instructor holding a foam sword.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
When I say “go” the instructor will swing the foam sword back and forth on the ground at your feet.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You must continually jump over the sword non-stop for 30 seconds.
  • For every time the instructor hits your feet with the sword, you will have 5 push-ups once time is up.
  • If you do not have perseverance and stop before time is up, then instructor will continue to hit your feet and your push-ups will add up.
  • The person who has the most jumps in 30 seconds (minus the times you get hit) is the winner.
  • Once time is up, you must go to the end of the line and do your push-ups (if any.)
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Endurance training by jumping over noodle without resting.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person in line has at least two turns.
