Skill: FOCUS
Drill: Over and Unders
Equipment needed: Two bars attached like a plus sign
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: The students will develop their focus skills by kicking a target over and under a set of bars without touching the bars.
Teaching SKILLZ: Extrinsic Motivation
When students successfully complete 10 accurate kicks, the instructor does 3 squat jumps—creating a fun, rewarding outcome that builds motivation through positive reinforcement.
Brain SKILLZ: Visual Processing
Students must visually track the position of the target in relation to the bar and accurately determine the correct leg to use, strengthening their ability to process and respond to visual information quickly.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setup the drill
For each line you will need two bars attached like a plus sign, and an instructor holding a kicking target on the other side of the bars
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • I will hold the kicking target either above the bar on the left or right, or below the bar on the left or right.
  • You will kick the target with the proper leg ten times in a row.
  • Your goal is to kick the target with the proper leg and without touching the bar.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Keep your chamber high.
  • Take your time and aim.
  • Keep your ground leg strong.
Step 5
  • Continue until every student has three turns.
Step 6
  • On the second turn, have the student start over if they kick the target with the wrong leg, or if they hit the bar.
Step 7
  • On the third turn, make it a contest to see who can kick the target ten times the fastest. If they kick with the wrong leg or hit the bar then they are automatically disqualified.
