Skill: Vision
Drill: Ninja in a Barrel
Equipment needed: One large yoga ball
Instructors needed: A few to monitor
Description: In this drill we will work on the ability to move and dodge, while at the same time reinforcing their memory of the vision words.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can see which student can be in for thirty seconds without getting hit. After the thirty second time cap, the instructor should call freeze and switch the person in the middle so more people can get a turn to be the ninja in the barrel.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must throw the ball at a moving target while saying their definition, and the person in the middle has to dodge the ball while saying the name of their word. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they have to aim for the person in the middle, and the person in the middle has to spot the ball and dodge it.
Step 1
Have the class form a large circle.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have one student start in the center of the circle.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Throw the ball at the person in the middle and say the definition of your word.
  • The person in the middle must dodge while saying their word.
  • If the person in the middle is hit but says their word they get a “freebie” and stays in the middle. A max of 2 freebies is allowed.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on vision words while working on dodging and moving.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn in the middle.
