Skill: Vision
Drill: Character Spelling Bee
Equipment needed: One clapper pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the student will test their spelling skills while kicking a target and racing against their opponent.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can award a point to the line that completed their kicks the fastest. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. The instructor can also give the lines silly names, like “Hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The students must be able to kick the target while spelling out the word that the instructor calls out. This works on their ability to recall information that they have learned in the past, as they have to spell a word they hear.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines with no more than six per line.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The first student in each line will stand in guarding stance in front of the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will say a character word and the students must spell the word by kicking the clapper target and saying one letter on each kick. For example: d-e-s-i-r-e would be six kicks.
  • The first student to spell the word correctly is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Multi Tasking with spelling and kicks
Step 5
  • Repeat the process until every student has a turn.
