Skill: Vision
Drill: Character Speed Ball
Equipment needed: One medium dodge ball
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will play a game of speed ball while repeating the definition of character lessons.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student says the wrong definition, if they do not define the word within the time limit, or if they drop the ball, then the student will have ten pushups, and then they can play again.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students must be able to see the ball coming towards them, catch it, and say the definition of the word they heard, and another vision word before they can throw it to another student. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at once, as they have to say their word or definition and throw the ball at another student, while during the game making sure they are watching for the ball to come towards them.
Step 1
Have your students make a big circle.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Hand th ball off to the first student
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student will start by saying a character word and then they will throw the ball to a student.
  • The student must catch the ball and then say the correct definition within five seconds.
  • If they drop the ball, say the wrong definition, or they can’t define the word within five seconds then they have to do ten push-ups.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • This is a great drill that builds reaction time while at the same time helps the students learn their character definitions.
