Drill: Speed Racers
Equipment needed: Four to six slammer targets
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice going from moving about to being still as quickly as possible. The students will race around the mat with their race car (slammer pad) but must quickly flip their pad over and sit on it when the instructor says “stop!” This is a great way to teach the students how to quickly listen and be still when commanded to do so.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – Instead of saying “freeze”, the instructor can say words like “trees” or “bees”, or similar sounding words in order to enhance the students’ auditory processing and keep the students engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – When the instructor says “freeze”, the students must be able to stop running, flip their pad over, and take a knee as strong as they can on their pad. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Make a big race track on your mat using cones if you do not have rings. Divide your class into teams of 4 to 6. Pick one team to go first.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Give each student in the team a slammer pad (face down) and have them spread out on the race track.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will race your race car around the race track.
  • When I say “stop!” you must quickly flip your race car over and sit on it with your legs crossed and hands on your knees.
  • The last person to sit still is out of the race.
  • Continue until one person is left in the race.
