Skill: Discipline
Drill: Cone Head
Equipment needed: 1 small cone per student and instructor
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill students will build better self-DISCIPLINE by working on sitting still and waiting for their friends without fidgeting or moving around.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can also say something like “who can sit stronger than a ninja: The boys or the girls?” or “who can sit stronger than our instructor the whole time?” This will get the students motivated to try and be as still and strong as they can.
Brain SKILLZ:
ATTENTION CONTROL – The student must be able to sit strong and still while they wait for their friends, as if they wiggle the cone will fall off of their head. This works on their ability to perform a task over an extended duration.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group, have the instructor and students sit in a circle with a stack of small cones, one for each person.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will place one cone on top of his/her head and pass the stack of remaining cones to the adjacent student.
  • The student will do the same, placing one cone from the stack on top of his/her head and pass the cones to the next adjacent student while sitting strong.
  • Once everyone has a cone on their head, everyone says “FINISH SIR/MA’AM!”
  • If any of the cones fall, start over. Try to get all the way around without letting the cones fall.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Sit still the whole time so that the cone doesn’t fall.
  • Remember to sit criss/cross in listening position #1
  • Keep your head up so the cone doesn’t slide off your head
Step 5
  • Continue three times around the circle.
