Skill: Discipline
Drill: Ship Captain
Equipment needed: 4 wave bag cushions or similar sized objects
Instructors needed: Several to monitor
Description: In this drill the students are going to challenge their discipline skills by following many different directions.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can trick the students by saying the name of a direction on the mat, and pointing to another direction. This will test their auditory processing and visual processing, as they have to recognize the audio cue as correct and the visual cue as incorrect.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must remember the names of the different sides of the mat, and when they hear the instructor say the name of that side, they must run towards it. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task.
Step 1
Have your student’s line up on one end of the training deck.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Place two wave bag cushions on opposite ends of the training deck. Name one set as the “ship” and the other the “island.”
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will be the ship captain and will give one of the following commands:
  • Ship – the students must run and put one hand on the ship
  • Island – the students must run and put one hand on the island
  • Shore – the students must line up at the starting point
  • Hit the deck – the students must drop on their stomachs
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • The last person to respond to the command is out. For example, the last student to put their hand on the ship after your command will have to sit out.
Step 5
  • Continue until only one person is left.
