Skill: Balance
Drill: Beat the Instructor
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: Two
Description: The students will develop their discipline skills by performing a Martial Arts move faster than the instructor, but they will begin on their backs. This is great for building Martial Arts technique, following directions, and listening skills.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – Instead of saying a martial arts move, the instructor can just say “go”, to try and trick the students into standing up. This will enhance their auditory processing and keep the students engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor call out a martial arts move, and stand up as quickly as they can as complete the move. This works on their ability to process and follow verbal commands.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the first student in each line lay on their back, and have an instructor lay on their back.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • I will say a Martial Arts move then say “go.”
  • When I say “go” you must jump to your feet and perform the move faster than the instructor.
  • The goal is to freeze into the perfect Martial Arts pose faster than the instructor.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • On the third round, make it a contest to see who can get in to the Martial Arts position the fastest, and if the student beat the instructor, then the instructor has to do ten push-ups.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
