Skill: Discipline
Drill: Get Low
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice DISCIPLINE by demonstrating their ability to stay calm in an uncomfortable situation!
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student wants to get a lower split, the instructor can tell the students to take a deep breath in through their nose, and out through their mouths, and push deeper in their split by a little bit. The instructor can explain that they do not have to do this, but if they want to get better and have really high kicks, then they can aim for a lower split every single time.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to hold their middle split for the whole duration, without acting silly or being vocal about their discomfort. This works on their ability to complete a task despite having distractions, as being in a split is uncomfortable, but they have to hold it for the whole duration even if it is uncomfortable (as long as it is not painful).
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need an instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The students will spread their feet as far as they can, getting into their split.
  • Once they feel uncomfortable, they will stop and hold.
  • They should stay frozen without falling for 10 seconds.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Don’t move, make sure you’re as still as possible.
  • Make sure that you breathe, it will help you stretch farther..
  • Stop when it gets uncomfortable, not when it hurts. If it hurts then it’s not helping you.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 – 3 turns.
