Drill: Don’t Flinch
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: One per group
Description: In this drill the students will demonstrate self-discipline as they perform their Martial Arts basics without flinching in between each move.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student flinches, the student will have five jumping jacks. If the student is able to resist flinching, then the instructor will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to resist flinching, despite it being an instinct, and hold their martial arts move strong. This works on their ability to follow directions and complete a task despite distractions around them.

Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
 
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student in line will stand up and perform their Martial Arts basics on the instructors command, but they cannot move.
  • In between each move, the instructor will try to get the student to flinch.
  • If the student flinches, then he/ she will have to do 3 push-ups.
  • Call out at least 5 random Martial Arts basics.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn to focus on techniques and not flinch
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
