Skill: Discipline
Drill: Elevator
Equipment needed: Four slammer pads per group
Instructors needed: One instructor per group
Description: In this drill the students are going to challenge their discipline skills by balancing on slammer pads with their listening positions and without falling.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student is able to complete their turn without falling over, and while staying still, then the instructor will do five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to stay on the pads without falling over. This works on their ability to stay on task despite distraction, as it can be scary for them to be that high up, and the pads they are on are unstable, but despite this they must stay as still as they can for the full ten seconds.
Step 1
Divide your students into several groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The first person in each group will sit on one knee (on one slammer pad) with their hands on their knees.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Count to 10 and see if you can stay on wiothout falling off.
  • Next, add a slammer pad and repeat step 2.
  • Continue by adding up to 4 slammer pads. Explain that they will need to be as still as possible in order to kneel on 4 slammer pads without falling.
  • You can mix it up by having them sit with their legs crossed or sitting like a master.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on staying on the pad without being distracted.
  • Overcome fear as the pads get stacked higher.
Step 5
  • Repeat the drill until everyone has a turn.
