Skill: Discipline
Drill: Cat and Mouse
Equipment needed: Four numbered circles or spots
Instructors needed: Two per group
Description: In this drill the students will practice discipline by trying hard on their exercises. One student will be the mouse and to run to four consecutive corners with exercise commands in each corner. The next student will be the cat and chase the mouse as they begin the same process once the mouse is finished with the first corner.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the mouse is able to get away from the cat, then the cat will have five pushups. If the mouse isn’t able to get away from the cat, then the mouse will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to do their exercises, while also being aware of where the other student is. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at one time, as when they go through this drill they must focus on themselves while also focusing on the cat/mouse.
Step 1
Pair your students up with a partner. One will be the cat and one will be the mouse. Assign one instructor to watch the mouse and the other to watch the cat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Lay rings on the floor in a circular pattern.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Lay out four spots to make a square, with the spots marking the corners. For each spot, explain what exercise they will do:
  • Spot #1 – 10 push-ups. Spot #2 – 10 leg raises Spot #3 – 10 squat jumps Spot # 4 – 10 jumping jacks
  • When I say “go” the mouse will start at spot #1 and do the exercise, then race to spot #2 and so forth.
  • As soon as the mouse is finished with their exercises in spot #1, the cat will start on spot #1 and do the same process as the mouse.
  • You must do your very best on each rep of the exercise in order for that rep to count.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • The mouse’s goal is to stay ahead of the cat.
  • The cat’s goal is to try and do their exercises faster than the mouse so that he or she catches the mouse.
Step 5
  • On the second round, have them switch roles.
