Drill: Around the Square
Equipment needed: 4 Cones per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice RUNNING by demonstrating their ability to run facing multiple different directions. This will challenge the students physically by requiring them to run forwards, backwards, and sideways as quickly as they can.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say another word that sounds like “go” in order to trick the students, like “gopher” and “ghost”. This will further test their auditory processing, as they have to listen for the whole word and not just the sounds of the word.
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students must be able to run in multiple directions while keeping their chest facing the same way. This works on their ability to do multiple things at one time, as they have to keep their chest and head facing one direction while running in another direction.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 4 cones set up in a square formation.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will stand up and face one of the 4 cones.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student will run forward to the 1st cone.
  • From their they will shuffle to a side keeping their chest facing the same direction as they started.
  • They will then have to back pedal to the next cone, and shuffle to the last cone.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Take big steps so that you can run fast.
  • Keep your eyes on the same wall or target the entire time.
  • Don’t fall even when you change directions.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student gets 2 turns.
