Drill: Race to the Pad
Equipment needed: One slammer pad per line
Instructors needed: One
Description: In this drill the students will race to the slammer pads and then sit on it as quickly as possible. The purpose of this drill is to build self-control.
Teaching SKILLZ: REDIRECTION
  • Emphasize fast sitting, hands in lap, and listening, instructors highlight what students should do—minimizing the need for discipline.
Brain SKILLZ: RESPONSE INHIBITION
  • Students must listen for the cue to start, run with focus, and then immediately transition to calm behavior.
Step 1 – Explain to the students how to have good self-control and provide some examples as it relates outside of the school:
  • Listen when people are talking to you
  • Sit still when you are asked to
  • Keep your hands to yourself
Step 2
  • Divide your class into several lines with no more than four students per line and have them line up on one end of the training deck.
Step 3
  • Set down one slammer pad on the opposite end of the training deck directly across from each line as shown in the picture.
Step 4 – Explain the Rules:
  • Listen for the instructor to say “go”
  • When the instructor says “go” run to your slammer pad and sit quickly
  • Keep your hands in your lap
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
Step 6
  • On the second round, make it a contest to see who can sit on their slammer pad the fastest.
