Skill: RUNNING
Drill: Don’t Drop the Ice Cream
Equipment needed: 1 dodgeball/2 small cone per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice RUNNING by being able to balance an object in their hands as they are moving quickly down the mat.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can ask the students if they want to be even more ninja. The instructor can then give them a challenge of having them pass the ice cream to the next person in line, or give the students a time limit.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to run as fast as they can, while also focusing on their ice cream cone. This works on their ability to do more than one thing at one time, as they are running and balancing an object in their hands.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have one small cone about 12’ from the students.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in line will stand up and use the cone and the dodgeball to make an ice cream cone.
  • They will have to move down and around the cone without dropping the ice cream.
  • If they drop it then they have to restart from the beginning.
  • On round 2 have them pass the ice cream to the next person in line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Run as fast as you can without dropping the ice cream.
  • Keep your eyes on the ice cream so you keep it balanced.
  • Don’t give up if you have to try again
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 turns.
