Equipment needed:
One ring per student and two foam swords per instructor
Instructors needed:
Two Instructors
Description:
In this drill the students will practice running around the mat. The alligators will chase the students around the mat as the students find an island for safety.
Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
If a student gets bitten by the alligators, they can go to the side and do ten jumping jacks in order to keep playing.
Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING
The student must be able to make quick and correct choices on where to move in order to avoid the alligators. When the instructor says “island”, they also have to run to the nearest one that does not have someone in the ring already, which works on quick decision making.
Step 1
Place one ring per student in various spots around the mat.
Step 2
Have the students begin by standing on one side of the mat.
Step 3
Give each instructor two foam swords to use as the jaws of an alligator.
Step 4 – Explain the Rules:
When I say “go” you will race around the mat trying not to get eaten by the hungry alligators.
When I say “island” you will race to the nearest island, which is one of the rings spread out on the mat.
If someone is already standing in the ring nearest to you, then you must find an empty ring.
If you get bitten by an alligator, you must go to the side and do 10 jumping jacks and then you can get back on the mat.
Step 5
Chase them around the mat for a total of 2 minutes.
