Drill: Beat the Bear
Equipment needed: 1 Cone Per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice having good RUNNING by demonstrating their ability to run quickly down the mat without falling or being silly, they will also have to do this while racing their instructor.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The students must be able to beat the “bear” to the cone every time when they come up.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to start quickly, and execute the correct crawl as well, while trying to beat the instructor to the cone.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students sitting with the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in each line will stand up and face the instructor.
  • The student will stand up and face the cane that is about 9’ in front of them, the instructor will go to bear crawl position next to the student.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student and instructor will race down to the cone.
  • The 1st one to get to the cone will win.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Eyes open to see the pad.
  • Take big steps as you play.
  • Good breaks so you don’t crash into the pad.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
