Skill: RUNNING
Drill: 4 Corner Challenge
Equipment needed: 4 wave bag cushions and 4 colored spots
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill, the students will practice their reactive memory skills with a race. This is great for teaching young students how to think and react quickly.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can time each student on their first turn. On the second round, the instructor can see if the student can get a faster time than they did on the first round.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students must be able to run as fast as they can, touching every pad until they are done. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to run as fast as they can and run in the correct direction in order to get a fast time.
Step 1
Set up four slammer targets – one in each corner of the training deck.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Show the students each colored spot with the number.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Place one spot on each wave bag with the number side down.
  • Have the class stand in the middle of the training deck.
  • The instructor will call out a number and the students will race to the correct corner. If they run to the wrong corner, they must sit down. (Designate an area that is not on the training deck for them to sit when they are out so that they are not in the way of the other students running.)
  • If they are the last student to touch the cushion, then they are out too.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on reacting quickly to touch the pads
  • Learn to make quick decisions
Step 5
  • The last student standing is the winner.
