Skill: RUNNING
Drill: Snake!
Equipment needed: 1 Cone Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice RUNNING by demonstrating their ability to work with their teammates to run together down the mat. This will challenge the students socially by requiring them to not play around with their friends but to stay focused on finishing the drill.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the teams silly names, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs”, in order to get the students motivated to win as a team. The instructor can award the team sitting the strongest first with a point.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to focus on how fast they have to run, but also how fast their friends are running and where they are in relation to other things around them. If they go too fast, their team might fall over or disconnect, so it is important for the student to focus not only on themself, but their team as well.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Set one cone on the opposite end of the mat from each line
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first 2-3 students will stand up and grab each others shoulder.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the students will run with their team down and around their cone.
  • If they break their chain then the students have to restart from the beginning.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Don’t let go of your friends.
  • Don’t go to fast.
  • Keep your eyes open as you run.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student is the leader.
