Skill: RUNNING
Drill: Catch It
Equipment needed: One large ball per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The instructor will roll a big ball across the mat and the student must catch the ball before it reaches the other end of the mat. This will help the students build control, gross motor skills, and spatial awareness.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student is able to catch the ball before it reaches the other end of the mat every time, the instructor will do three pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to track the ball, and when the instructor says “go”, estimate how fast they have to run in order to reach the ball before the ball touches the wall.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group you will need a large ball, such as a yoga ball.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • I am going to start by rolling a big ball across the mat.
  • When I say “go” you will try and catch the ball before it reaches the other end of the mat.
  • Continue until each student has three turns.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Run fast.
  • Hold on to the ball.
  • Don’t let the ball go.
Step 5
  • On each round, make the students wait a little longer before you say go so that they have to run a little faster.
