Skill: RUNNING
Drill: Catch Me!
Equipment needed: One wave bag cushion per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will work on developing their running skills by chasing an instructor around an obstacle. This drill will build basic motor skills and spatial awareness.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say words that sound like “go” in order to trick the students, like “gopher” and “ghost”. This will further test their auditory processing, as they have to listen for the whole word and not just the sounds of the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to see the instructor run around the pad, and try to tag them. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as if the instructor changes direction the students must change direction quickly with them in order to tag them.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group you will need a wave master cushion or similar object.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will chase the instructor around the obstacle for 30 seconds.
  • Your goal is to catch the instructor before time is up.
  • If you catch the instructor, then he/ she must do 10 push-ups.
  • If you knock the obstacle down, then you have to do 10 push-ups.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Stay close to the bag.
  • Run fast.
  • Keep your eyes up.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
