Drill: How Close
Equipment needed: 1 kicking shield per line
Instructors needed: Multiple to monitor
Description: The students will practice having good AWARENESS by demonstrating their ability to demonstrate spatial awareness by being able to kick a pad when it the correct distance away. This will challenge them mentally by requiring them to be able to tell the distance between themselves and the kicking shield.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The 1st student in line will stand up and face the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will start by getting close to the student with the kicking shield in front of them.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the instructor will slowly start to back away from the student.
  • When the student thinks, the time is appropriate they will kick the pad with a front kick.
  • The student will do this 3 times before going to the end of the line, each time the instructor moves they can move faster or slower. (depending on the skill of each individual)
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Watch the kicking shield so you know when to kick.
  • Make sure that your kick looks good.
  • Make sure you wait for the right time to kick.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has multiple turns.
