Drill: Collector Vs. Defender!
Equipment needed: For each group you will need one bucket, a kicking shield, and 5-10 cones.
Instructors needed: One for each group
Description: This drill will be targeting the skill COURAGE by focusing on them not being afraid to get hit. This will challenge their social stages of development because they will be battling against their peers.
Teaching SKILLZ: CHOICES
The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to beat their friend even more. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING
This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as the collectors have thirty seconds to get all the cones, and they must react quickly to the defender’s movements. The defender must be aware of where the bucket is and where the collector is, and block accordingly and adjust to their movements quickly.
Step 1
On one side of a square or designated area put the bucket. On the other side spread out the cones.
Step 2
  • Divide your students into even groups.
Step 3 – Explain the rules:
  • Each instructor will call up two students to go against each other.
  • One student will be the collector. The other student will be the defender.
  • The collectors will be standing at the edge of the ring or designated area. When the instructor says “GO” it is the collectors job to run and grab the cones one by one then put them in the basket.
  • The defender will be standing in front of the basket. Their job is to stop the collector from putting the cones in the basket.
  • The Collectors will only have 30 seconds to get all the cones in the basket.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Try to fake out the defender
  • Don’t be afraid to get bumped by the defender.
  • Stay on your feet for the entire round
Step 5
  • Continue until every student has 2-3 turns.
