Skill: COURAGE
Drill: Spar Wars
Equipment needed: Two foam swords per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will play a fun game of spar wars. This will help the students build the courage to hit someone else in a fun game.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can award the winner of the match a point, and the student with three points wins. If they win, they get to spar with another winner, until there is one winner of the whole class. That student can be the “Spar Wars Champion” until the next time they play the game.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to quickly spot places to hit, while keeping an eye on their opponent. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they have to spot openings that they see before they close, as well as block as soon as they see something coming towards them.
Step 1
Divide your class into groups and pair each student with a partner.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group you will need to mark a ring on the ground if you do not have square rings in your mat as shown in the picture.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will try and chop at your opponent’s legs with the foam sword.
  • If you chop your opponent’s leg, then they cannot use that leg.
  • The first person to chop both of their opponent’s legs is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn not to be afriad to hit someone else.
Step 5
  • You must stay within the ring for this drill.
