Skill: COURAGE
Drill: Target Block
Equipment needed: 4 small square targets and one large slammer target per group.
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students are going to face their fear of getting hit by blocking targets thrown at them.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student gets hit with the pad, or they use an incorrect block, then the student will have five pushups. If the student is able to do all their blocks correctly, then the instructor will do five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pad in the air, estimate where it is going, and use the correct block at the right time. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as they are tracking a moving object in the air.
Step 1
Divide your class into several lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
In front of each line, place the large slammer target up against a wall or mirror. Have the first student in line stand on the target.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will throw 4 small square targets at the student (one at a time) while the student tries to block them
  • The student must not step off of the target that he/ she is standing on.
  • This means that the student must have the courage to block the targets, and not move to dodge the targets.
  • Add a little more speed to each of the 4 targets thrown at the student. If the student gets hit, then he/ she must do 5 push-ups.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure you are reinforcing the courage to get hit by reminding them not to cry if they get hit.
Step 5
  • Compliment the students as they demonstrate bravery.
