Skill: Courage
Drill: Gauntlet
Equipment needed: Eight blocker pads
Instructors needed: Eight (you can use students)
Description: In this drill the students will build the courage to get hit by running through an obstacle course of instructors swinging blocker pads up and down and side to side.
Teaching SKILLZ:
Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – On the second round, the instructor can make it a competition to where if they get tagged by the student behind them, or if they get hit by one of the instructors, then they have to have a seat. The last student standing will be the gauntlet champion of the class until the next time they play the game.
Brain SKILLZ:
Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to run through the gauntlet as fast as they can, while using their visual processing skills to not get hit by the instructors. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, and to make the correct choices quickly, because they have to choose when they should jump and run quickly so they do not get tagged.
Step 1
Set up two lines of four instructors on the training deck crossing in the middle and give them each a blocker pad.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each instructor, assign them to either swing the pad up and down or side to side (while sitting on their knees).
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When you say “go” the instructors will start swinging their pads in their assigned direction non-stop.
  • You must run through the criss-cross course without getting hit.
  • Once you pass the second instructor in the course, the next student will go.
  • Every time you get hit by the blocker pad, or tagged by the student behind you then, you must stop and do five push-ups.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Tuck your knees high when jumping over the pads that are swinging side to side.
  • Run quickly through the pads that are swinging up and down.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
