Skill: Courage
Drill: Board Break Relay
Equipment needed: On board per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will learn how to have the courage to hit by playing a fun board break relay race.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must hear the instructor say “go”, run down, and break the board with the correct technique three times. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to hit the same spot on the board three times as quick as they can or else they might lose the relay race.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines and have the student’s line up on one end of the training deck.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, have an instructor on the opposite end of the training deck that will hold a re-breakable board.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When the instructor says “go” the first student from each line will race to the other end of the training deck and break a board three times with a palm strike.
  • After the third break, the student will race back to the end of their line and the next student in line will go.
  • The first line finished is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Students will learn to apply courage by striking the board with confidence to break it.
Step 5
  • You can add variety by changing the board break to a different strike or kick.
