Skill: COURAGE
Drill: Board Break Race
Equipment needed: Eight re-breakable boards
Instructors needed: Eight (you can use students)
Description: In this drill the students will build the courage to hit with a relay race up and down the training mat, hitting re-breakable boards.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say words that sound like “go”, like “ghost” or “gopher”, in order to try and trick the students. This will help the students improve their auditory processing, as they must listen for the whole word and analyze what it means, instead of just listening for the sounds of a word.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor say “go”, run down to their instructor, and break the board five times first in order to be the winner. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to hit strong and correctly every time in order to be fast.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups of four students in each group.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Line up four instructors on each end of the training deck, and give them each a re-breakable board.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Line up four instructors on each end of the training deck, and give them each a re-breakable board. For each line, give each instructor a number 1 to 4, matching the number of the instructor directly across from them. (You can use students if you are short on instructors)
  • For each group, give each student a number 1 to 4, and have them stand in between the instructors that match their number.
  • When you say “go” you will race to each end of the training mat, breaking the boards held by the instructors assigned to you.
  • If you miss, keep striking until you break it. Then run and break the other instructor’s board, and so forth.
  • The first student to break each of their instructor’s boards five times is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Concentrate on breaking the board
  • Breaking your board with speed
  • Run fast between lines
Step 5
  • Continue until each group has a turn.
