Skill: Courage
Drill: Get the Cone
Equipment needed: Two cones and slammer pads per group, and cones if your mat doesn’t have lanes
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will build courage by either knocking their opponent out of the lane or getting the cone on the opposite side before their opponent does.
Teaching SKILLZ:
Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
Brain SKILLZ: RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must run directly at their partner, clash pads, and then run past them to try and get the pad. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being the fear that might come from running at someone with the intention of hitting them. The student has to resist flinching in order to play the game correctly.
Step 1
Pair your students up with a partner.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Designate lanes for the students and have your students on opposite end of the lane, each laying on a slammer pad facing each other. If you don’t have lanes in your mat, use cones to make lanes. Lay a cone behind each student on opposite ends of the lane.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will jump to your feet and crash into each other.
  • Your goal is to either knock your opponent out of the lane or quickly grab your opponent’s cone before they grab yours.
  • The one who does gets a point.
  • The best two out of three is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Run fast at your partner.
  • Make sure you hit your partner with your pad.
  • Get to the cone fast.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has two turns.
