Skill: Courage
Drill: Block & Counter
Equipment needed: Two foam noodles for each line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will be working on their COURAGE by facing the fear of getting hit. This will challenge students intellectual stage of development by getting them to see which side is about to get hit and quickly block it.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student is not able to block in time and they get hit with the noodle, then the student will have five pushups. If the student is able to do it correctly on their turn without making a mistake, then the instructor will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the noodle coming towards them, block it, and counter with a punch with the opposite hand. This works on the ability to make sense of what they see and participate in visual activities, as they have to track the moving object and block at the appropriate time, as well as counter with the correct side.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Give each instructor a line & two foam noodles.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first person in line will come up and get into a guarding stance.
  • The instructor will have one noodle in each hand.
  • Which ever side of the students head the instructor swings for, the student has to cover.
  • When the instructor brings the noodle back in front of the student, they will then have to counter with the opposite hand, throwing a punch.
  • Continue this 4-5 times switching sides.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your eyes on your instructor, if you look away your instructor may be able to hit you.
  • Block strong, if you have a weak arm and don’t flex while blocking, your instructor could still hit you.
  • Go fast so that you don’t get bopped!
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 rounds.
