Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

Going, Going, Gone:

The students will practice their focus by learning to judge distance and timing while punching.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – Challenge them to pick if they want to hit the target soft, medium, or hard. The harder they hit, the further it will go.
  • Brain SKILLZ: VISIUAL PROCESSING – The student will develop spatial awareness as they hit the target correctly.

Math Kicks:

In this drill the students will solve a simple math problem and then kick the target equal to the sum of the math problem. This is a great way to teach your students math!
  • Teaching SKILLZ: CHOICES – Allow the student to pick an addition or subtraction problem, or even a single-digit or double-digit problem.
  • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student will have to hang onto the math problem in their brain as they solve it and then hit the target with the correct number.

In this drill the students are going to practice their kicks back and forth while learning how to take turns quickly.

  • Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students will multi-task by counting and kicking at the same time while alternating with their partner.

Instructor Switch:

The students will build their teamwork skills by calling out Martial Arts moves for the instructor to perform. This will help the students build confidence and good leadership skills.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: CHOICES – The student gets to choose which moves to call out for their instructor, therefore building more confidence in their social skills.
  • Brain SKILLZ: LONG-TERM MEMORY – The student will have to recall martial arts moves for their instructor to perform, therefore building their memory of those movements.

Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

Dizzy Race:

In this drill the students will develop better control of their body by racing down the training mat, spinning their head around a blocker target four times, and then kicking a target ten times. This is a fun way to teach your students to control their body.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: UP THE REP – Challenge the student to kick stronger on each kick even though they will be dizzy.
  • Brain SKILLZ: RESPONSE INHIBITION – The students will develop cognitive control of their attention as they don’t allow being dizzy to distract them from trying hard to kick the target.

Speedy Ladder:

The students will build their control by front kicking a target while not hitting a stack of pads below their foot. This will help the students build good chambers in their front kicks.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can kick the target correctly without hitting the pad on the ground, then the instructor will do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student will develop this cognitive skill as they multi-task by kicking the target with increasing reps, while not hitting the pad on the ground, and also keeping their feet in the ring.

Long-term MEMORY is when you need to remember something for a long time like your phone number and the names of your Martial Arts moves. 3. Reactive MEMORY is how quickly you can remember something.

4 Corner Memory:

In this drill the students are going to put their reaction skills to the test by racing to the proper corner
  • Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY – Try to trick the students by pointing to the wrong corner as you call out a move.
  • Brain SKILLZ: AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students will build listening skills as they listen for the commands to follow as quickly as possible.

Spell It:

Students will practice MEMORY by demonstrating their ability to spell out their name as they add a basic with every letter of their name. This will challenge the students mentally by requiring them to quickly have to demonstrate different moves and spell their name at the same time.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can spell their name while performing strong moves, then the instructor will do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student will have to hang onto the order of letters from their name in their brain as they spell it and perform martial arts moves.

Balance Circle:

Students will work on having good BALANCE by keeping their foot up while passing the pad around to everyone in the group.

  • Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students will be challenged to maintain their balance while coming up with their answers.

Battle Kicks:

The students will work on their BALANCE by battling their partner to see who can do the most kicks without putting their foot down.

Listening Position Dash:

Students will practice having good DISCIPLINE by demonstrating their ability to listen to a position that is called out by the instructor then they will have to quickly and demonstrate the position without moving or being silly.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: CHOICES – After round 1 get each student in turn to choose their favorite position number to race against their classmates with.
  • Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students will exercise their speed of processing by being the fastest to remember and show the correct position.

The students will develop their discipline skills by performing a Martial Arts move faster than the instructor, but they will begin on their backs. This is great for building Martial Arts technique, following directions, and listening skills.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can be the instructor, then the instructor will do 10 push-ups.
  • Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student has to process the name of the move quickly in order to beat the instructor.

In this drill we will be working on foot eye coordination by flashing the clapper pad a specific way. The student must have good coordination by kicking the pad with the correct kick, using the correct part of the foot.

  • Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must quickly respond to the command while catching the pad.

Ladder Punches:

In this drill the students will strike the mitts while doing ladder punching. This is a great drill for the students to practice their counting.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: UP THE REP – Have the students punch harder on each rep.
  • Brain SKILLZ: ATTENTION CONTROL – Students will practice attention control by punching while also increasing power and reps.

Crawl, Kick, Jump Relay:

In this drill the students will apply focus to a fun relay race. The students will race to crawl under an obstacle, kick a target ten times and then jump over the obstacle. This is a fun drill that builds focus with their body.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly team names like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs” to motivate the students to win as a team.
  • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the steps to the race (crawling under the bar, doing ten kicks, jumping over the bar, running back) while racing other teams.

Student will work together to punch a small pad back and forth between a partner without dropping the pad.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the students drop the pads, they must do 5 pushups.
  • Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students must be able to run back with their partners while making sure the pads do not fall.

    Students will practice MEMORY by demonstrating their ability to show short term memory by having to remember all of the moves inside of a combination. This will challenge them mentally by requiring them to quickly have to remember a single move from their combination.
    • Teaching SKILLZ: NEUROBICS – Instead of counting the moves as “1, 2, 3”, you can count colors instead to connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
    • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember each move in the combination that the instructor does, and then do the correct move that the instructor calls out.li>

    In this drill the students are going to have a relay race up and down the mat on one foot.
    • Teaching SKILLZ: HEALTHY COMPETITION – Each team can have silly names to gain points for, so the students feel more motivated to gain points, like “hamburgers vs. hotdogs”.
    • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must remember to hold their leg up the entire time, doing multiple hops, as they race down the mat.

    • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – For every person who does not laugh for the whole duration, the instructor will do one pushup.
    • Brain SKILLZ: ATTENTION CONTROL – The student must be able to stay in their middle split the entire duration, until the whole team is done, even if they already passed the ball to the person behind them.

    • FITNESS means to make your body stronger.

    Here are three FITNESS tips that you will learn today:

    1. When your muscles burn, your muscles learn. 2. If you exercise sloppy, your muscles become sloppy. 3. Practice healthy habits to become stronger.
    Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

    Chop:

    In this drill the students will build their abdominal muscles. The students will pair up with a partner, one in sit-up position holding a foam sword. The student will do a full sit-up and try to chop their partner’s head as their partner dodges from side to side..
    • Teaching SKILLZ: INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can ask the student as they come up how many they want to do, five, ten, or fifteen, depending on who they want to make proud (Five=instructors, ten=instructors and parents, fifteen=instructors and parents, and blackbelt mindset).
    • Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to use the noodle to hit the instructor on the head, without missing.

    Fit Dash:

    In this drill we will work on making our body stronger by having great FITNESS with different types of exercises while making it a race to see who can be the fastest!
    • Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY – The instructor can say things that sound like “Go home” to try and trick them, like “Go gnome”.
    • Brain SKILLZ: AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must be able to react to the instructor’s commands and perform the correct exercise correctly.

    Here are three COORDINATION tips that you will learn today:

    1. Having hand eye and foot eye coordination. 2. Knowing how to do two things at one time. 3. Knowing your left and right.
    Skill-Building Drills – 15 Minutes

    Race to the Line:

    In this drill the students will practice having coordination by knowing the left side of the room and the right side of the room.
    • Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY – The instructor can point to the left, and say “right” to try and trick the students.
    • Brain SKILLZ: SPEED OF PROCESSING – When the instructor says a direction, they must quickly make the correct choice and run to the correct side, while standing strong.

    Copycat:

    In this drill we will work on our COORDINATION through repetition by doing and saying each Left and Right command to build body awareness.
    • Teaching SKILLZ: EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can complete their turn without any mistakes, the instructor will do five pushups.
    • Brain SKILLZ: WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to remember what kicks were said previously, and perform the ones that the instructor adds on as well.

    The students will run to a corner and the counter will try and guess which corner the students are in.

    Octopus:


    The students will race to the other end of the mat without getting tagged by the octopus.

    Pirate Dodge ball:


    The heroes must try and knock over all of the cones on the pirate’s side using dodge balls.
